NOW I want to share my actual vanity space! Can you believe that I paid less than $100 for this entire space?! I'm talking desk, mirror, lighting, chair and accessories! I'm the type to shop Craigslist, Goodwill, Thrift stores, etc to find what I want because I knew I could put some love into something and create magic which is basically what happened. It all started with my half bath vanity light that was switched out after buying a prettier one. I went on the hunt for a desk that would serve as my vanity. After much searching a deal popped up on Craigslist. I found this Ikea desk there for get this... \u003Cb\u003Eonly $20\u003C\/b\u003E. Pretty unbelievable right. It had a few dings\/paint scratches here and there but nothing serious. What's funny is I was looking at this same desk on Ikea's website in all white so God was looking out for me with this one. I picked up a few accessories from the Dollar General... yes, the Dollar General. I found my mirror at a store called Dirt Cheap for only $7. It was black and I spray painted it white. I used the same spray paint on my chair... Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Paint + Primer in gloss white. I purchased this at Home Depot. I also found that letter N at the Dirt Cheap store for only 88 cents. Yes, you read that correctly... $0.88! I knew I didn't want the orange drawers and went back and forth with myself as to what I wanted to do with them. I thought about painting them but I really didn't feel like the hassle. Then I thought... hmmmm, I could just covered them with a sticky vinyl paper. Then I had to think about what I wanted it to look like. I wanted to find a white paper with some type of gold design on it but that was a bust. I wasn't finding anything close to that. Then as I was walking past the Cricut accessories in Joann's I stumbled across these \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.joann.com\/cricut-glitter-vinyl-12x48\/zprd_14934285a.html#q=cricut+glitter\u0026amp;start=1\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Erolls of glitter vinyl by Cricut\u003C\/a\u003E. When I saw the gold, I was sold...AND it was on sale that day at 30% off (on sale for $6.29\/roll). The drawers weren't so bad since the pieces were smaller. But the large piece for the cabinet door was almost a nightmare to get on. You have to imagine this stuff is just a big piece of tape. I've put decals on walls before, using a card to slowly press it into place. I thought I would use the same technique to roll this stuff on. sigh... it was not cooperating. It was almost impossible to keep the bubbles out and when there weren't bubbles it would wrinkle. Here's a closer pic of the long drawer. If you look under the word \"Beautiful\" you'll see where I accidentally tore the paper after pulling it up to reapply one too many times and just played the wrinkled piece there. I glued my (painted white) wood cutout over that area to kind camouflage my mistake. Did it work? I absolutely LOOOOOOVE the outcome of my vanity. I'm still planning to add another light to left side. The light will come from my upstairs bathroom. So once I find a new light for that bathroom I will be able to knock out that project to complete my lighting. I may add some things along the way, like a fluffy rug for my feet. I mean, I've spent so much time making sure my home is comfortable for my entire family (and not just for me), I figured it was time to have something girly for myself. Today, I want to talk about the chair I found at a local flea market. I paid $29 for it although I knew I wanted to change the way it looked.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EImmediately after getting it home I took my carpet cleaner and cleaned the seat. I didn't want me or my family sneezing from the dust. After it dried, I detached the seat from the chair. I found some, brought it home and changed my mind about it. It was beige and I new I wanted to paint my chair white... white and beige... what was I thinking. I needed color. So the next day I went back out and found some fabric on the clearance rack at Joann's and when I saw I immediately said to myself \"THAT'S IT\"... So yea, at $6 a yard, why not. I bought my foam too while I was there.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EI took my chair outside and began to spray paint my chair. I turned over my seat and began pulling out the staples only to uncover a ridiculous amount of staples. An electric knife or box cutter would've made it easier but I had neither so I made the best of it. One project I'm determine to do is to create a queen size winged back headboard for my master bedroom. I already got my feet wet completing my first diamond tufted headboard. I actually ordered it online and was able to get free shipping which meant no driving around to pick up all 7 yards that I ordered. (I know, 7 yards is a lot) My next step will be to begin making my buttons. I still need to purchase my other supplies which will happen sooner or later, I'm hoping. I'm currently debating on my bed frame... whether to make it myself, have someone else make it or purchase it. sigh... I have yet to make up my mind on this. I kinda want to make sure my frame has been established and in place so that my headboard measurements are accurate. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAfter reading many blogs and having my prior headboard making experience, I'm confident enough in myself to know that I can pull this off. This time I will space out my buttons a little more. It took me forever and a day to tuft my last headboard simply because it had about 50 buttons. I couldn't do them all in one day because the tufting made my fingers tired. I could've saved my fingers if I had cut holes into my foam. So, I decided to get a couple of price quotes to see what people were charging to do this. You know what?... it's pretty darn expensive. The costs ranged from $750 - $1500. Soooo, I made up my mind to do it myself. Now, I'm 6 and a half months pregnant but motivated because you know what, I want what I want. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;\"\u003EAfter short research I found that silver leaf could get pretty expensive and aluminum leaf is a great alternative to achieve the same look. I found\u0026nbsp;lots of information at \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.gildedplanet.com\/aluminumleaf.asp\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EGilded Planet\u003C\/a\u003E including \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.gildedplanet.com\/videotutorials.asp\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Evideo\u003C\/a\u003E on how to actually apply the leafing which was very helpful to actually see the texture. They sell lots of supplies there too but I decided to look on ebay (from the suggestions of other leafing bloggers)\u0026nbsp;and found 500 sheets of aluminum leaf for $30. I also purchased the 3 hour sizing\/adhesive (Rolco quick size, 8oz) from ebay as well. I spent some time trying to figure out which sizing to get because I didn't know which would be better for my project whether to use water vs oil based sizing. I basically used the top tissue paper to lift the leaf like when you turn a page in a book, used my brush handle to lift it or just picked it up with my finger tips. Part of those supplies... primer. What to get? The blogging world suggested Zinsser and swore by its greatness to cover stained wood because I DID NOT want to sand either piece of furniture. I'd still be working on those things if I did. Although,\u0026nbsp;I did sand down smalls portions of the chest because the shiny coating was laid on kinda thick in some places and you could see puddles and drips so I sanded those smooth. I went to Home Depot and the sales person suggested Glidden Gripper Primer. They told me it could stick to anything, had less of an odor that that\u0026nbsp;of the Zinsser\u0026nbsp;AND it was cheaper. When I saw that it came in grey, I was sold. So, I only bought\u0026nbsp;1\u0026nbsp;pint of it\u0026nbsp;and was able to cover both pieces with it. I only used about half of it. I was amazed at how it stuck to the glossy surfaces of my chest and nightstand. FYI: I rolled this stuff on. The free time I used to do this project was a couple hours after work. So when I got home the next day, I decided to do a little test area on the top of my nightstand so that way\u0026nbsp;I could see how long it would take for the sizing (adhesive) to get to the right tackiness and how long it would take for me to leaf a certain area... this\u0026nbsp;WAS my first leafing project. I used the \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/Paint-Brushes-Rollers-Trays-Brushes\/h_d1\/N-5yc1vZbd1o\/R-100626098\/h_d2\/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053\u0026amp;langId=-1\u0026amp;storeId=10051\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Echeapest brushes I could find at Home Depot\u003C\/a\u003E to apply my sizing. I bought a few because I didn't want to clean them... The sizing dries in a short amount of time and makes them hard and unusable.\u0026nbsp;The sizing does have a thin consistency\u0026nbsp;when you put it on your brush but goes on a surface very sticky (like pancake syrup) so it will drip from your brush if your brush is full. I only used the foam brushes once or twice because they hold the sizing TOO well\u0026nbsp;and caused puddles (and frustration) when applying the sizing. It took about an hour for my sizing to be ready for me to leaf. Sorry guys if I don't use all of the gilding\/leafing language. It just gets too confusing for me since I'm not a \"professional\" at this. Anyhow, as far as testing for tack... I basically felt it at the initial application and tested it at the minimal testing time (about an hour later since it was hot out) to see if I felt a difference. Once I did, I started applying the leaf. Now, this stuff is VERY FRAGILE. You will need to use the tissue paper or whatever separates each sheet to aid in holding it because it will split and break at the slightess movement or smallest air flow (even you breathing on it). I saw some cotton gloves that I wish I'd gotten to help with this issue because the slightest bit of moisture on your fingertips will cause this. So, think about finding some cotton gilding gloves if you think you'll have an issue with this.\u0026nbsp;It's nothing major\u0026nbsp;but fingertip moisture will cause the leaf to stick to your fingers.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EOnce the leaf is placed it is very forgiving because it will mold to whatever it falls on (that has sizing on it). I literally used a dry blush brush that I never used to pat my leaf into place. I saw on someone else's blog that said they did the same thing. I used a rub on glossy polyurethane which was very easy to apply. I just used an old t-shirt to apply it. The grey underneath creates a subtleness about the cracks. Different colors could create the drama that suites your taste. My daughter's room is still in progress so I'll have to come back with an update once it's finished. Oh and I had to do some patching to my nightstand because I left my sizing to \"tack\" for a little too long and the leaf didn't stick in a lot of places. Thinking I could use Rub 'n Buff to fill these gaps I messed it up. The finish of the Rub 'n Buff is too matte in comparison to my shiny leaf and the difference was VERY noticable.\u0026nbsp;It just\u0026nbsp;looked a mess so I had to spend some time re-doing some of the leafing. I used the Rub 'n 'Buff to fill in the tiny details of both pieces where it was difficult to leaf. Below is a photo I took before removing the excess leaf off of the nightstand. My chest looked exactly the same way so don't be alarmed, it easily dusts off. Once flaked away, you'll only see what sticks to the nightstand. I actually lined a couple of drawers with paper using Mod Podge. This was my first time working with Mod Podge and I ended up having a few bubbles underneath my paper. Lesson learned. The photo shows the paper a little lighter than what it is in person. I've found that aluminum is much cheaper than silver and it seems to have the same beautiful outcomes.
